Meet the Principal

David Lee was born of immigrant parents from South Korea and is living proof of the impact that teachers and a strong education can make creating opportunities that can be life-changing. A graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and minor in Asian Studies, he started his career as a Dallas ISD alternative certification intern in 2007 and has been a part of Dallas ISD for the past 18 years. At Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, Lee was a science teacher, department chair, and master teacher. During his time at Roosevelt, Lee developed the district science curriculum and was a district test writer, and later was a trainer for math and science alternative certification interns.

Lee went on to serve as assistant principal at Kimball High School. He was able to transform Kimball's STEM Magnet program in partnership with the Mountain View College engineering department, which allowed students to take 30 hours of dual credit courses to earn a level 2 certification in mechatronics.

The Kimball mechatronics pathway later developed into the Kimball E-Tech collegiate pathway in mechatronics. Lee was also able to lead the National Academy Foundation program of hospitality and engineering to both be NAF distinguished academies.

As the principal of Hector P. Garcia Middle School for the past six years, Lee has been instrumental in transforming the school from a state-rated C campus to a B+, achieving three TEA distinctions. Under his leadership, Garcia M.S. has seen a dramatic cultural shift, significantly increased parental involvement, and earned the distinction of becoming the first International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in South Dallas. The school now ranks among the top middle schools in MAP growth for both reading and math, is in the top three for SEl, and boasts one of the highest-ranked school climates, placing in the top 10 among all secondary schools in the district. In recognition of his achievements, Lee was awarded the Master Principal designation in 2024 and named the Dallas ISD Secondary Principal of the Year. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, CSP.

Principal Lee is deeply honored to serve the Sunset community, committed to preserving the legacy of excellence and rich history that defines Sunset High School. He eagerly anticipates collaborating with dedicated teachers, supportive parents, community partners, and, most importantly, the incredible students to drive Sunset toward even greater achievements. David Lee nació de padres inmigrantes de Corea del Sur y es prueba viviente del impacto que los maestros y una fuerte educación pueden tener al crear oportunidades que cambian vidas. Se recibió de Baylor University con licenciatura en Biología y subespecialización en Estudios Asiáticos y empezó su carrera como pasante de certificación alterna en Dallas ISD en 2007. Durante los últimos 18 años que ha pasado en el distrito, fue maestro de ciencias, encargado de departamento y maestro experto en Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, donde también elaboró un plan de estudios de ciencias para el distrito y fue redactor de exámenes, además de entrenador de pasantes de certificación alterna en matemáticas y ciencias.

Lee luego pasó a fungir como subdirector en Kimball High School. Transformó el programa magnet STEM de Kimball en colaboración con el departamento de ingeniería de Mountain View College, lo cual permitió que los estudiantes tomaran 30 horas de cursos de crédito dual para obtener una certificación nivel 2 en mecatrónica. La especialización en mecatrónica de Kimball luego se transformó en la especialización universitaria E-TECH de Kimball en mecatrónica. Lee también lideró el programa de hospitalidad e ingeniería de la National Academy Foundation hacia su reconocimiento como academias NAF distinguidas.

Como director de Héctor P. García los últimos seis años, Lee fue esencial en la transformación de la escuela desde plantel clasificado por el estado con una C a clasificarse en B+, habiendo logrado tres distinciones de la TEA. Bajo su liderazgo, García M.S. ha visto un cambio cultural profundo, un aumento significativo en la participación de los padres y se distinguió como el primer Programa Secundario del Bachillerato

Internacional en el sur de Dallas. La escuela ahora está entre las mejores secundarias en crecimiento MAP en lectura y matemáticas, está entre las tres mejores en SEl y presume una de las culturas escolares mejor calificadas, posicionándose entre las 10 mejores entre todas las secundarias del distrito. En reconocimiento de sus logros, Lee fue premiado con la designación de director experto en 2024 y fue nombrado director del año de secundarias de Dallas ISD. Actualmente está en vías de completar su doctorado en Liderazgo y

Política Educativa en la Universidad de Texas en Austin.

El director Lee se siente honrado por poder atender a la comunidad de Sunset, está comprometido con preservar el legado de excelencia y rica historia que define a Sunset High School y anticipa colaborar con maestros dedicados, padres que apoyan, socios comunitarios y, lo más importante, los increíbles estudiantes que sacan a Sunset adelante hacia logros cada vez mayores.
